Craig J. Mara, LLB

Craig is the founding lawyer of Mara Estates Law, where he exclusively practices in the areas of estate and incapacity planning, estate administration and related litigation.

Craig spent five years working in Toronto before returning to Kitchener-Waterloo.  Most of this time was spent working at a boutique law firm where he simultaneously practiced as an estate planner as well as an estate litigator.  This dual practice approach granted him first-hand insight into the types of disputes that can arise from poor estate and incapacity planning/administration and this experience enables him to draft trustworthy documents for his all of his clients, from the simplest estates to those more complex.

Whether or not this is your first experience planning your estate, administering the estate of a loved one or you’ve found yourself in the midst of unfortunate litigation, Craig understands that these can be daunting and confusing times.  Craig is committed to providing services that you can not only trust, but that you can understand.

Craig attended University of Southampton Law School in the United Kingdom, where he graduated with First-Class Honours and received the Dean’s List Award for academic achievement.  It was during law school that Craig developed his passion for the law surrounding estate and incapacity planning, dignified death and health care.  Craig’s paper proposing an amendment to the law surrounding individual autonomy and death was published in the University of Southampton Student Law Review and his final dissertation explored the use of Secret Trusts within Wills in the UK.

Craig is a member of the Waterloo Wellington Estate Planning Council.

​

In his free time, Craig is an avid sports fan, golfer and writer.  He and his wife enjoy travelling and, thankfully, have similar taste in sports teams.
